Porto Museums

On a two-day visit, take Serralves and nothing else: the park, the villa and Siza's building are the city's one museum that is a destination in itself, and the tram to Foz passes close enough to make an afternoon of it. On a three-day visit, add the Soares dos Reis for the marbles and the Portuguese nineteenth century, an hour and a half from São Bento on foot, and the Casa do Infante for the Roman floor under the Ribeira. With children the answer is the FC Porto tour, then the tram museum, then the Cálem lodge, whose museum is a twenty-minute preamble to a glass of port for the adults and a juice for the rest.

The Sé and Clérigos museums come free with tickets you are buying anyway. WOW is a museum quarter for a wet afternoon in Gaia when the lodges are done; the rainy-day page ranks it that way.

The Museu Nacional de Soares dos Reis is the one Porto museum run by the state agency Museus e Monumentos de Portugal, and its rules are the agency's. $11.62 (€10) adult, Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00, closed on Monday and on 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May, 24 June, which is the city's São João holiday, and 25 December. Under-12s are free; the agency's site-wide reductions of 50 per cent for over-65s, for 13 to 24 and for a family with at least one adult and one minor apply here as at Guimarães, though the Porto page prints only the adult fare.

The free-day rule is the one older guides get wrong. Since August 2024 the agency's museums are free for residents in Portugal on 52 days a year, any day they choose, on presentation of a citizen card and tax number at the desk; the previous free Sunday and holiday mornings for everyone were abolished at the same time. The museum's own page says there is no free Sunday and no first-Sunday rule for visitors, and we print it because a page that says 'free on Sunday mornings' still ranks for this museum. The collection is the reason to pay: the Soares dos Reis marbles, including O Desterrado, the nineteenth-century Portuguese painters, and the Carrancas palace itself, which Soult used as his headquarters in 1809 and Wellington took over the night of the Douro crossing. Casa do Infante on the Ribeira, the Museu Romântico in the Palácio de Cristal gardens, the Reservatório in the east, the Casa Museu Marta Ortigão Sampaio in Boavista and the Museu do Vinho do Porto on the Massarelos riverfront are the five. Each is $4.65 (€4); the Bilhete Museu do Porto is $9.30 (€8) and valid seven consecutive days across all of them, so it pays from the third space. Reduced entry is $2.32 (€2) for over-65s, the unemployed and groups of ten. Free for under-18s, students with ID, Cartão Porto holders on Sundays, on Heritage Days and Museum Night, and always for the Gabinetes and the material banks. All five run Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 17:30 and close on Monday, public holidays and 24 and 31 December.

The Porto.CARD leaflet lists four of the five as free entry with the card, and that is the leaflet's best offer; whether the card is on sale is the open question the Porto.CARD page tracks. Without it, a family with two teenagers pays $18.60 (€16) for both adults on the seven-day ticket and nothing for the children, and sees the Roman mosaics, the exiled king's house and whatever the Reservatório is showing. Monday is the museum-free day in Porto: Soares dos Reis, the five municipal spaces, the tram museum and Serralves's museum building all shut. What stays open on Monday is the list of places that are not quite museums — the Clérigos rooms with the tower, the Sé's treasury with the cloister, the FC Porto museum, the Cálem museum with the tasting, and WOW if its own hours, which we could not read, allow. So the honest advice is to put Monday on the bridge, in the lodges and up the tower, and to keep Tuesday to Sunday for the buildings on this page.

Serralves's park is the exception worth knowing: the foundation sells the park-only ticket seven days a week, and the hours behind its tabs would not render for us, so ring or check on the day.

Three different rules, and only one of them helps a visitor. The state's rule, in force since August 2024: 52 free days a year for residents in Portugal, any day, registered at the desk with a citizen card and tax number; no free Sunday for anyone else. The city's rule: Museu do Porto free on Sundays for Cartão Porto holders, who are residents again, and free every day for under-18s and students with ID, which is the useful clause. Serralves's rule: free entry for everyone on the first Sunday of each month, time window not stated on the page we read, so go in the morning. The Museu do Carro Eléctrico has no free day; the FC Porto museum has none; WOW's rules are not stated.

What that means in practice: a couple visiting for three days pays for every museum on this page unless one of the days is the first Sunday of the month, in which case Serralves is free and the $27.90 (€24) saved is the largest single discount in the city. A family pays nothing for the children at the municipal spaces and the Soares dos Reis, half for teenagers at Serralves and nothing under 12. The Bilhete Museu do Porto at $9.30 (€8) is the one bundle that is certainly on sale and certainly pays: three municipal spaces in a week would cost $13.95 (€12) singly. The Clérigos combos are the second: $29.10 (€25) for the tower, the Palácio da Bolsa and the Misericórdia's MMIPO museum against $27.89 (€24) for the first two bought separately, so the combo is the MMIPO for a dollar and change; and $31.60 (€27.20) for the tower with Serralves against $39.50 (€34) apart. The Porto.CARD leaflet lists four municipal spaces free, 50 per cent off the Soares dos Reis and the tram museum, 25 per cent off Clérigos and the Bolsa and 20 per cent off Serralves, on a $8.72 (€7.50) one-day walker card — a real saving on paper for a museum-heavy day, but the official sales page redirects to the homepage, third parties report sales suspended since July 2026, and no official statement confirms either, so we do not count it.

No Porto museum sells a timed slot and none of them sells out, which is the difference from Lisbon's Belém or Florence's Uffizi. The two tickets worth buying on the platform are the ones that match the official price and save the desk: the Serralves all-access pass and the park entry, which the foundation itself prices at $27.90 (€24) and $17.43 (€15), and the FC Porto museum and tour, whose platform listing at $19.74 (€17) is for a museum leg the club prices only for members. Everything else is a walk-up and the desk takes cards.

What you cannot buy ahead is more telling. The Soares dos Reis sells at the door only; the municipal spaces likewise. WOW's own ticketing refused our fetch, so its official price is not stated and the platform cards are the only figures we print for it. And no card on the platform sells the Palácio da Bolsa, the Sé's cloister or the São Francisco museum on its own; the cathedral guided tour is the one product with a museum entry inside it. Cálem's interactive museum, WOW's seven halls and the Museu do Vinho do Porto on the Massarelos quay all carry the word, and only the last is a museum in the municipal sense at $4.65 (€4). Cálem's is the first twenty minutes of a $25.60 (€22) cellar tour that ends in two glasses, and it is a good twenty minutes: the region's map in relief, the grape varieties under glass, the barrel ages explained before you see the barrels. WOW is the largest of the three, seven museums on the wine, the cork, the drinking vessel, chocolate, textiles, the city and the region, in the lodges Taylor's converted above the Gaia quay; its site refused every fetch we made, so the only prices we can print are the platform's, $23.23 (€20) for one museum with a tasting and $40.65 (€35) for the day.

The honest ranking for a museum afternoon is the Museu do Vinho first for the price, Cálem for the port, and WOW for a wet day when you have already done the lodges.
