Coimbra from Porto

Both the Intercidades and the Alfa Pendular leave from Porto Campanhã, not São Bento, and both call at Coimbra-B, the through station outside the centre rather than Coimbra-A by the river. CP's price sheets carry no journey time for either service and its timetable pages render by script, so no departure grid loaded for us in Q3 2026 — the times you will find online come from third-party planners rather than from CP. Buy the return with the outward leg: the last services north are the constraint on how long you can stay, and they are the one thing you cannot look up on a price sheet.

Every fare below is from CP's TP 2026 price sheets, in force from 1 January 2026, and every university price from visit.uc.pt.

Coimbra-B, Coimbra-A and the walk into town

Long-distance trains stop at Coimbra-B; the city's own station, Coimbra-A, sits by the Mondego at the foot of the old town. CP publishes no connecting time and no separate fare for that short hop on a page we could read in Q3 2026, and no distance either, which is why the answer to 'how far is Coimbra from Porto' varies by fifty kilometres depending on who you ask. Plan on a short connecting train or a taxi at the Coimbra end, and on a climb once you are there: the university sits on top of the hill and every route up it is stairs or a steep street.

Bus, car, and Coimbra as a stop on the way south

Coaches run from the Campanhã intermodal terminal. Rede Expressos returned a 403 to us in Q3 2026 with only a network-wide 'from €2.95' on its homepage, and FlixBus is a booking engine rather than a published tariff, so no bus fare is printed here. Brisa's toll-rate page returned a 404, so no A1 toll figure either.

The more interesting option is not a day trip at all: Coimbra is halfway to the capital on the same line, so it works as a break in the journey rather than a return ticket — the Porto to Lisbon page prices the through fares and explains what a stopover costs you.

The Joanina is an eighteenth-century library of gilded shelves and painted ceilings built for João V, three barrel-vaulted rooms deep, with a colony of bats that eat the insects that would otherwise eat the books. It is entered in small groups at fixed times, and this is where days go wrong. The university's own visiting rules state that the hour printed on your ticket is the access time for the Biblioteca Joanina, that visitors are advised to arrive five minutes beforehand, and that failing to appear at the stated time means the loss of entry to that space.

Tickets are non-refundable, cannot be exchanged, and are sold at most three months ahead. The rest of the circuit has no fixed time at all: the Royal Palace, St Michael's Chapel and the science rooms can be visited before or after the library while they are open, and a self-guided ticket stays valid for two days.

• The time on the ticket is the library door time — not the university, not the hill.
• Be there five minutes early; the university says so in writing.
• Miss the slot and you lose the library. No refund, no exchange, no second slot.
• Photography and video are forbidden on the Joanina's noble floor, and flash is banned everywhere on the circuit.
• No tripods, no selfie sticks, no drones inside the visit spaces.
• Tickets go on sale up to three months ahead; the self-guided ticket is valid two days, the guided one only for its booked day and hour.

What time to book from Porto

Late morning. CP prints no journey time for the train, so an early slot puts a non-refundable ticket at the mercy of a connection you cannot verify; a slot around midday gives you the morning to get there, the afternoon for the palace, the chapel and the science rooms on the same ticket, and an evening train home. If you have any doubt at all about the trains, buy the $14.53 (€12.50) programme without the library and add the Joanina at the kiosk on the day — the kiosk sells from 09:00 to 19:00, and slots do go, but nothing is lost if the train does.

The tower everyone tells you to climb

You cannot. The University Tower is marked closed to the public on the university's own opening-hours page, with no reopening date stated in Q3 2026, and the Natural History Gallery of the Science Museum is closed too. Guides and videos still describe the tower's 184 steps and its view over the Mondego as the highlight of a Coimbra day, so expect to be the one person who knew before arriving.

The Paço das Escolas is the old royal palace turned university: a courtyard on the crown of the hill with the library on one side, St Michael's Chapel on another and the Via Latina arcade across the top. The Science Museum's rooms — the Chemistry Laboratory, the Academic Museum, the Cabinet of Curiosities and the Mineral Gallery — sit a few minutes downhill and come inside the same programmes. Below the university, the old town falls away in stairs to the Mondego, and the Botanical Garden is a separate, free-standing walk.

Beyond the university

The Sé Velha, the fortress-like old cathedral halfway down the hill, and the Santa Cruz monastery on the flat by Praça 8 de Maio are the two other monuments of the old town; neither publishes prices on a page we could read in Q3 2026, so none are printed here. Down at the river, the ruined convent of Santa Clara-a-Velha and the Portugal dos Pequenitos miniature park are the standard afternoon for families. Coimbra is also a fado town, with a heavier, male tradition distinct from Lisbon's — the venues advertise their own evening sessions, and nothing about them is published on an official page we could cite.

Eating in Coimbra

No citable list — Michelin, Slow Food — names a Coimbra venue in the material we hold, so no restaurant is named on this page. Lunch is not included on the one tour card here, which stops for a pastry and water and leaves the meal to you. This is the order we would take on the train. Departure times are our own suggestions rather than CP's, because CP printed no timetable grid for us — check the Campanhã board the evening before and pick the service nearest each slot.

• Before you leave Porto — book a Joanina slot for late morning at visit.uc.pt, and buy the return train at the same time as the outward one.
• Early train from Campanhã. Intercidades second class $17.72 (€15.25), Alfa Pendular turística $22.90 (€19.70).
• Coimbra-B, then the short hop or a taxi into the centre, and the climb to the Paço das Escolas — allow more time than the map suggests, it is all stairs.
• Late morning — the Joanina at the printed time, five minutes early at the door.
• Then, in any order, on the same ticket: the Royal Palace, St Michael's Chapel and the courtyard terrace.
• Early afternoon — lunch below the Sé Velha, then the Chemistry Laboratory, the Cabinet of Curiosities and the Mineral Gallery before the 18:45 last admission.
• Late afternoon — down the stairs to the Mondego, and the train north from Coimbra-B.

The two-day version, and the stopover

Coimbra rewards an overnight more than most day trips from Porto, because the fado is in the evening and the university circuit runs to 19:30. The efficient way to buy that is not a return ticket at all: break the journey here on the way to the capital, since the same trains carry on south. Coimbra and Aveiro in one day, on your own

Awkward by train and easy by car, which is exactly what the $115.10 (€99) small-group day sells. Aveiro sits on the Porto urban network and Coimbra on the long-distance line, so doing both by rail means two different products, two connections and no published journey time for either. If you must choose one, take Coimbra for the library and the hill, Aveiro for the canals and a flat afternoon.

Yes, if the library is the reason you are going. The Joanina is the single most extraordinary interior within a day of Porto — three gilded rooms built as a statement of royal power, with a bat colony as the pest-control department — and the hill it stands on carries seven centuries of the country's oldest university. That is a real destination, not a pretty stop.

The conditions are honest ones. It is the most expensive day trip on this site before you buy a single ticket, because the train is a long-distance fare in both directions and no urban day ticket applies. The town is steep, the tower is closed, and the university's circuit is the day — the rest of Coimbra is a handsome provincial city rather than a second attraction. And the Joanina slot is unforgiving in a way nothing else on this site is: a non-refundable time printed on a ticket, reached by a train whose journey time CP will not publish. Book the slot late in the morning and the day works; book it for 10:00 and you are gambling.

Coimbra or Aveiro, if you only have one day

Coimbra for a monument, Aveiro for an afternoon. Coimbra costs roughly twice as much before tickets, takes most of a day in transit and asks you to climb; Aveiro is a canal, a painted boat, a beach village and a train fare of $8.95 (€7.70). Families with small children and anyone travelling in the rain should take Aveiro.

Anyone who has ever queued for a library should take Coimbra. The day-trips hub sets both against the Douro and the northern towns.

The single card on this page, the $115.10 (€99) small-group day, is a car with a guide that does Coimbra and Aveiro in one run: eight seats maximum, a moliceiro boat ride on the lagoon, a local pastry and water, and free time in both towns. What it does not include is stated plainly in the listing and matters here more than on most pages: no monument tickets. That means no Joanina. If the library is why you are going to Coimbra, either buy that ticket yourself for a time the tour can actually meet, or take the train and keep the slot in your own hands.

Book the Joanina for late morning, buy the $19.18 (€16.50) programme that contains it, take the Intercidades at $17.72 (€15.25) rather than paying for a speed nobody will quantify, and give the afternoon to the palace, the chapel and the science rooms on the same ticket. That is the day, and it is worth doing once. Take the $115.10 (€99) car with Aveiro only if two towns in one day matters more than the library, because it does not include the library.
