Porto to Braga

Braga is the end of one of CP's Porto urban lines, which means it is priced by zone, not by destination, and sold from the same machines as a ride to Campanhã. Trains leave São Bento and call at Campanhã, where the Alfa Pendular and the Guimarães line also stop. CP's timetable pages render by script and gave us no departure grid or running time in Q3 2026, and the January 2026 zone poster prints the Porto–Braga zone count only in a grid we could not read as text — so the honest answer to 'how much is the train to Braga' is the ladder below, plus the tourist ticket that makes the question go away.

Which ticket to buy

For a Braga day trip alone, the one-day tourist ticket at $8.95 (€7.70) is the answer unless the machine shows the single at under $4.47 (€3.85) each way, in which case two singles are cheaper. For Braga one day and Guimarães or Aveiro another, the three-day ticket at $19.18 (€16.50) covers all of them. Ask the counter for the zone count if you want the single; the getting around page explains why the urban network's zone logic is different from Andante's, and why an Andante Tour ticket does not cover this train.

Bus, and the fare nobody prints

Coaches run Porto–Braga from the Campanhã intermodal terminal, and Rede Expressos returned a 403 to us in Q3 2026 with only a network-wide 'from €2.95' on its homepage, so no bus fare is printed here. FlixBus is a booking engine rather than a published tariff. The train is the answer we can stand behind; the porto-to-lisbon page has the same problem with the same operators.

Bom Jesus do Monte is a pilgrimage sanctuary on a wooded hill about five kilometres east of the city centre, and the thing you have seen a photograph of is its stairway: a baroque zigzag of white-and-granite flights, the Stairway of the Five Senses and the Stairway of the Three Virtues, climbing through chapels of the Stations of the Cross to the basilica at the top. Climbing it is free and takes twenty to thirty minutes at a photographer's pace (our estimate; the sanctuary prints no time). The alternative is the funicular, a water-counterbalance railway from 1882 run by the Confraria, which carries you from the bottom station to the top for $2.91 (€2.50) one way or $4.65 (€4) return.

The classic day is up on the funicular, down on the stairs, so the chapels are in front of you.

What the official page does not say

It does not say which months are summer and which are winter, so in March or October check the funicular's lunch closure before you plan around it. It prints no reduced or family fares, no address, and nothing about parking. The three tours on this page all stop here; the $45.30 (€39) coach calls it a 'visit and tour' of the sanctuary, and none of the three listings say whether the funicular is included, so assume the stairs.

Getting up the hill from Braga station

Braga's urban buses run from the city to the foot of the sanctuary; the operator's fare and timetable did not load for us from an official page, so budget for a paid fare on board or a taxi from the station rank — our reading of the trip is fifteen to twenty minutes. The walk from the station to the old town is about ten minutes on the flat, and the cathedral is on the way.

Braga was Roman Bracara Augusta and later the seat of the archbishops who ran the Portuguese church, and the old town is what that money built: the Sé, begun in the eleventh century and the oldest cathedral in the country; the archbishops' palace and its garden, the Jardim de Santa Bárbara; Rua do Souto, the pedestrian spine lined with cafés; and the Arco da Porta Nova at its end. The cathedral's treasury, chapels and High Choir are the interior the best-rated tour sells 'exclusive access' to; the sé's own price and hours did not load for us from an official page in Q3 2026, so we print no figure and advise the tour rows above if the interior matters. The Igreja de Santa Cruz and the Raio Palace are the two baroque façades worth a detour, both on the walk between the station and the cathedral.

• Museu dos Biscainhos — a baroque palace museum; hours and price not read from an official page, closed Mondays like most state museums (our expectation, not sourced).

Eating in Braga

Rua do Souto and the squares around the cathedral have the cafés; no citable list — Michelin, Slow Food — names a Braga venue in the material we hold, so no restaurant is named here. Lunch is included on the two small-group tours and not on the coach day; the where-to-eat page keeps to Porto.

This is the order we would take on the train. Train times are our estimates because CP printed no grid for us; check the São Bento departure board the evening before.

• 07:45 — São Bento. Buy the $8.95 (€7.70) tourist ticket at the counter, or the single if the machine's zone count makes it cheaper.
• About 09:00 — Braga station. Taxi or city bus to Bom Jesus; be at the funicular for the first cars before the coaches.
• 09:30 — up on the funicular, $2.91 (€2.50). The high choir and bell tower, $1.16 (€1), before the 12:30 lunch closure; the basilica; the view down the stairway.
• 10:45 — down the stairway on foot, chapel by chapel; twenty to thirty minutes at photograph pace.
• 11:30 — bus or taxi back to the centre; lunch on Rua do Souto.
• 13:30 — the cathedral and the Santa Bárbara garden, then the Raio Palace façade and the Arco da Porta Nova.
• 16:00 — the train home; São Bento by about 17:00 on our reading, in time for a port lodge before they close.

Braga and Guimarães in one day, on your own

Possible with the three-day tourist ticket or two singles, because both are urban lines through Campanhã: Braga in the morning, back to Campanhã, out to Guimarães for the afternoon. It is three train legs and CP prints no times for any of them, so it is a day for people who like timetables. The $45.30 (€39) coach does both plus Viana do Castelo without one; the Guimarães page has the castle's partial closure that changes what you would see there.

Yes, and it is the cheapest of the good ones. The train is a zone fare, the sanctuary costs $2.91 (€2.50) if you ride and nothing if you climb, and the old town fills an afternoon without a ticket. It is also the one day trip on this site that works in rain: the cathedral, the palace and the arcaded streets are indoors or under cover, and the funicular runs regardless. The condition is that Braga is a city, not a spectacle. People who come expecting the Douro's landscape or Guimarães's castle hill find a handsome provincial capital with one extraordinary stairway. Come for the stairway and the baroque, and it is a full and satisfying day.

All three cards on this page pair Braga with Guimarães, and the cheapest adds Viana do Castelo, so a coach is really a decision to see two or three towns in one day rather than one town properly. The gain: one meeting point, a guide who knows which chapel matters, and Guimarães's castle hill without a second train. The cost: the $45.30 (€39) coach sees the cathedral and the castle from outside and includes no lunch; the two small groups fix that at $122.00 (€105) and $145.30 (€125), roughly ten times the DIY transport cost, for the interiors, a lunch and a pickup at the door.

Our reading: the coach for three towns on a budget, the $145.30 (€125) small group if the cathedral's chapels are the reason you are going, and the train if Braga alone is enough — which, for most people, it is.

Take the train with the $8.95 (€7.70) tourist ticket, be at the funicular for the first cars, walk down the stairway, and give the afternoon to the cathedral and Rua do Souto. The day costs under $15 and is the best-value day trip from Porto. Book a coach only for what the train cannot do — Guimarães and Viana do Castelo in the same nine hours — and if you do, the $45.30 (€39) coach is the value pick and the $145.30 (€125) small group is the one that opens the cathedral's chapels.
