Porto to Guimarães

Guimarães is the terminus of one of CP's Porto urban lines, so it is a zone fare bought at any station machine, and the trains leave São Bento and call at Campanhã. CP's timetable pages render by script and gave us no departures or running time in Q3 2026; the January 2026 zone poster prints the Porto–Guimarães count only in a grid we could not read as text. So the fare is one of the rungs below, and the tourist ticket is the way not to care which.

Which ticket, and the times blogs print

For Guimarães alone the one-day tourist ticket at $8.95 (€7.70) wins unless the machine shows the single under $4.47 (€3.85) each way. Guides that print 'a train every hour, 70 minutes' are describing a timetable CP would not show us; the Braga page has the same caveat, and the getting around page explains why Andante tickets do not cover this line. No Guimarães bus fare is printed here either: Rede Expressos returned a 403 to us with only a network-wide 'from €2.95' on its homepage.

From the station to the castle

Guimarães station sits south of the centre. The walk up Avenida Dom João IV and through the old town to the castle hill is about twenty-five minutes on our reading, uphill at the end; the two old squares, Largo da Oliveira and Praça de São Tiago, are on the way. A taxi from the rank does it in ten.

There is no bus we can cite.

The castle is a tenth-century foundation rebuilt in granite with a square keep, the building on every Portuguese schoolbook cover as the place Afonso Henriques, the first king, is said to have been born. It is run by Museus e Monumentos de Portugal, open Monday to Sunday 10:00–18:00 with last entry at 17:30, and costs $5.81 (€5). The page states: 'The Castle of Guimarães is partially closed for re-qualification works of the building.

However, it is still possible to visit the Armoury Square.' The facts pack we work from adds that the wall-walk reopened under an MMP notice and the keep remains closed; no reopening date is printed anywhere we could read. So what $5.81 (€5) buys in 2026 is the courtyard and the walk along the walls, with the view over the town — which is most of what the keep gave you — and not the tower itself. Tickets for the castle are sold at the Paço dos Duques.

The palace

The Paço dos Duques is the fifteenth-century palace of the first Duke of Bragança, rebuilt in the 1930s as an official residence and now a museum of tapestries, furniture and arms around a courtyard, with a chapel at one end. It is the interior the town has, and it is the one the coaches do not include: none of the three cards on this page lists it among the entries. Give it forty-five minutes.

The small Romanesque church of São Miguel do Castelo stands between the two, free, and is where the first king was baptised according to the tradition the town prints on its signs.

Below the castle hill the medieval town is a grid of granite houses with wooden balconies around two squares: Largo da Oliveira, with the church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira and the Gothic shrine outside it, and Praça de São Tiago, the one with the café tables. Between them the arcaded Antigos Paços do Concelho, and around them Rua de Santa Maria, the street the tourist board uses on its posters. The whole centre was inscribed by UNESCO in 2001, and the town's motto, painted on a stretch of the old wall, is 'Aqui nasceu Portugal' — Portugal was born here.

All of that is free and takes the afternoon.

• Largo da Oliveira and the Padrão do Salado — the square and the 14th-century shrine, free.
• Praça de São Tiago — cafés under the balconies; the place to eat.
• Rua de Santa Maria — the old street from the squares up towards the castle.
• Igreja de São Miguel do Castelo — the Romanesque chapel by the castle, free.
• Penha — the wooded hill above the town, reached by cable car from the edge of the centre; the operator's fare and hours did not load for us from an official page, so budget for a paid ticket.

Penha, if the sky is clear

The Penha sanctuary and its boulder-strewn hilltop are the view over the whole Minho, seven kilometres up a road the cable car shortcuts; Turipenha, the operator, did not give us a page we could cite in Q3 2026, so no fare or timetable is printed. On a clear day it is the best hour of the trip; in cloud it is a cable car into fog. Decide at the station by looking up.

Eating in Guimarães

Praça de São Tiago and the streets off it have the restaurants; no citable list — Michelin, Slow Food — names a Guimarães venue in the material we hold, so no restaurant is named here. Lunch is included on the two small-group tours and not on the coach.

This is the order we would take on the train. Train times are our estimates; CP printed no grid for us, so check the São Bento board the evening before.

• 08:15 — São Bento. Buy the $8.95 (€7.70) tourist ticket, or the single if the machine's zone count makes two cheaper.
• About 09:30 — Guimarães station. Walk up through the old town to the hill, or taxi from the rank.
• 10:00 — the Paço dos Duques as it opens, $5.81 (€5); buy the castle ticket at the same desk. Forty-five minutes.
• 11:00 — the castle: Armoury Square and the wall-walk, $5.81 (€5); the keep is closed. São Miguel do Castelo between the two.
• 12:30 — down Rua de Santa Maria to Largo da Oliveira and Praça de São Tiago; lunch under the balconies.
• 14:30 — Penha by cable car if the sky is clear; if not, the Museu de Alberto Sampaio beside the Oliveira church.
• 16:30 — the train home; São Bento by about 17:30 on our reading, with the Clérigos tower open until 19:00 if the evening is free.

Guimarães and Braga in one day, on your own

Both are urban lines through Campanhã, so it is Guimarães in the morning, back to Campanhã, out to Braga for Bom Jesus in the afternoon on the three-day tourist ticket or two singles — three legs with no printed times. The Braga page has the sanctuary's funicular hours that make the afternoon work, and the $45.30 (€39) coach does both towns plus Viana do Castelo without a timetable.

Yes, as a half-day or a comfortable whole one, and yes even with the keep shut. The castle hill, the palace and the two squares are the best-preserved medieval town within an hour of Porto, cheap to reach and free to walk, and the wall-walk gives the view the keep used to. It is not worth it if the tower interior is the reason you are going; the MMP page prints no reopening date, and nobody can tell you when the scaffolding comes down. The other honest caveat is size: Guimarães is four or five hours of town, so the question people ask — Braga or Guimarães — is really whether you want the medieval hill or the baroque stairway, and the answer for a first visit is the hill, because the stairway photographs better than it walks.

How much time do you need in Guimarães? Four to five hours in the town, an hour more for Penha; a full day only if you eat slowly. Stay in Porto — the where-to-stay page sorts its areas — and treat Guimarães as the short day and the Douro Valley as the long one.

Every tour that visits Guimarães visits Braga too, so a coach is a decision to see two towns in one day. The gain is Braga's Bom Jesus stairway without a second train and a guide who walks you through the castle courtyard; the two small groups add the castle ticket, the cathedral interior and lunch. The cost is the palace, which none of the three includes, and the free time, which is measured in tens of minutes at each stop.

Our reading: the $45.30 (€39) coach if three towns on a budget is the goal and you will buy the castle ticket yourself; the $122.00 (€105) eight-person day if you want the castle walked with a guide and a pickup at the door; the train if Guimarães alone is enough, which for a half-day it is.

Take the train with the $8.95 (€7.70) tourist ticket, do the palace and the wall-walk as they open, eat under the balconies in Praça de São Tiago, and ride the Penha cable car only if the sky is clear. The day costs about $20 with both monuments and is back in Porto for the evening. Book a coach only to add Braga without a second timetable, and if you do, the $122.00 (€105) eight-person day is the one that walks you through the castle rather than past it.

Whatever you choose, know before you go that the keep is closed and nobody prints a date. And when the train pulls back into São Bento, the Porto guide has the evening.
