Porto Airport to the City: Metro, Bus, Taxi or Transfer

Walk out of arrivals and follow the metro signs down one level: the Aeroporto station is open-air, a pair of platforms with ticket machines, no gates and no staff. Buy the Andante Azul card at the machine for €0.60 — it takes cards and coins, and the screen has an English option — then load a Z4 title: €2.30 for a single ride valid 1 h 15 from validation, which is enough for the change at Trindade, or €8.55 for the Andante 24 Z4 if the rest of the day involves rides. The Andante Tour 1 at €7.75 also covers the airport ride and every zone for 24 hours, so on a day that starts at the airport and ends at the Gaia lodges it is the cheaper of the two 24-hour titles.

Validate at the yellow post before boarding; the fine for an unvalidated title is €120 to €350, and the inspectors board at Casa da Música. The airport's own transport page is rendered by script and returned no text to us, so nothing from it is printed here.

Where to get off

Casa da Música is the stop for the Boavista hotels and the bus on to Serralves; Trindade is the centre, with the tourist office inside the station and the yellow line D one level down for São Bento, the Sé lanes and Jardim do Morro across the bridge for the Gaia lodges; Bolhão, one stop further on the trunk, is the market and the Rua de Santa Catarina hotels; Campanhã, at the end of the shared section, is the station for every intercity train, so a same-day onward journey to Lisbon changes there without touching the centre. Ribeira has no metro: from São Bento it is a twelve-minute walk downhill, and the Guindais funicular that used to cover the last stair is closed for maintenance. The getting around page has the whole network and the zone logic.

STCP runs three daytime lines to the airport. The 601 and the 602 both link Cordoaria, the square below the Clérigos tower, with the terminal, the 602 via Padrão de Moreira; they run from 05:30 to midnight, about every 25 minutes, with the STCP page's own caveat that 'timetables vary depending on the time of year'. The 604 runs from Hospital São João, on metro line D, via Crestins, from 06:00 to 21:00 about every half hour, and is the line for a hotel in the university district.

The fare is any Andante title in the right zone, or the €2.50 'bilhete de bordo' bought from the driver, payable by cash, MB WAY or a bank card, phone or watch on every STCP bus since 26 January 2026; the STCP airport page does not state the zone, so buy at the metro machine or pay on board. The bus wins over the metro in exactly two cases: a hotel in the Clérigos and Cedofeita streets around Cordoaria, where the metro would leave you a walk from Trindade, and the hour before 06:06 when the first bus at 05:30 is the only public transport running. The 601 stops are on the departures kerb; look for the STCP sign rather than the coach bays.

The airport's own site prints that taxis 'circulate 24/7' and are 'always available at taxi ranks', and that is the whole of what an official page told us about them: no tariff, no flag-fall, no luggage supplement, no night rate. Portuguese taxis are metered, and the meter, not a negotiated figure, is the price; a driver who quotes a round number before you get in is the one to walk past. Uber and Bolt both operate in Porto and pick up at the airport, but their fares are dynamic and no official page states one, so the €30, €25 or €20 that forum posts quote is somebody's receipt on somebody's evening and we do not print it as a fact.

The private transfers the platform lists are the only fixed prices in writing: $29.96 (€26) for a vehicle to or from any Porto address and $29.03 (€25) to a city hotel, booked ahead with the flight number so the driver waits through a delay. That is roughly the difference between a fare you know and a fare you find out, and for one traveller with hand luggage the metro at €2.30 beats all of them. The distance to the centre is not stated on an official page either; the metro's 27-minute figure and the 3M's hourly loop are the best proxies for a ride that is about 15 kilometres by road on our map reading.

The metro network closes at 01:00 on every line and the last train leaves the airport at 00:42; a flight that lands at 00:30 with a passport queue misses it. From then until the 06:06 first train the choices are three. The STCP 3M runs from the terminal to Avenida dos Aliados every 60 minutes between 00:30 and 05:30 on ordinary Andante titles or the €2.50 on-board ticket, with no night supplement on the 2026 tariff; it is the cheapest answer and the slowest, and Aliados at 02:00 is a walk or a taxi from anywhere but the Baixa hotels.

The taxi rank runs all night at a fare nobody publishes. And the pre-booked private transfer meets the flight at €26 per vehicle, tracks the arrival time, and cancels free up to 24 hours before on the platform's standard terms, which is the reason it is the option we would choose for a family, a late flight or a hotel on a hill. Leaving at night is the same in reverse: the first train towards the airport leaves Trindade at 05:58, which reaches the terminal about 06:25 on the 2016 timing, too late for a 07:00 departure with bags to drop; for those, the 3M from Aliados at the top of the hour or a booked car.

Three things to do in the terminal and three to leave. Do buy the Andante card at the metro machine, because every later ride in the city loads onto it and the Andante shops in town keep shorter hours than the machines. Do use the tourist office in arrivals if you need a paper map or a Porto.CARD you ordered online: it is open daily 09:00 to 18:00, closing for an hour at lunch, on WhatsApp at +351 938 668 462, and the Porto.CARD page explains why the card's own sales page now redirects to the tourism board's homepage and what the leaflet still promises. Do get a SIM if you need one: EU roaming is free at home rates until 2032, and for everyone else the NOS Travel eSIM at $11.61 (€9.99) for 15 GB over seven days, the Vodafone Portugal-and-Europe eSIM at $23.24 (€20) for 15 days and the MEO Enjoy Portugal eSIM at $11.62 (€10) for five days are the three operators' own prices in Q3 2026; the airport's Wi-Fi terms are not stated on its script-rendered page, and Porto's municipal 'Porto Free Wifi' covers the buses and the squares once you are in town.

Leave the currency desk alone, since every bus, machine and café takes a card; leave the airport coach bays alone unless a hotel shuttle is meeting you, because there is no scheduled airport express beyond the STCP lines; and leave the Porto.CARD unbought until you have read what it does not cover. The first afternoon, if the flight lands at lunch, is the walk from Trindade down Aliados to São Bento and the river, which needs no ticket, and the Porto in one day itinerary starts from that station for the same reason. The tourist tax of €3 a night, up to seven nights, children of 12 and under exempt, is charged by the hotel and not at the airport.

The route back is the same line E from Trindade, with the first train at 05:58 and trains every 15 minutes through the day from 07:00; allow 35 minutes from the Trindade platform to the terminal doors and add the walk from your door to the station, which from the Ribeira quay is a twelve-minute climb to São Bento and one stop on line D. From Campanhã, after an intercity train, line E runs through without a change. From the Gaia lodges it is line D from Jardim do Morro to Trindade, then E; from Foz or Serralves it is the bus to Casa da Música and E from there, and a Z4 title is needed from any of them because the airport is the fourth ring. The trap is the ticket: a Z2 single bought for the centre does not reach the airport, and the inspectors know it, so load a Z4 or ride on a Tour pass.

For a 06:30 departure the metro is too late; the 3M night bus leaves Aliados on the hour until 05:30, and the transfer operators take a 04:00 pickup at the same fixed price. The Porto to Lisbon page covers the other way out of the city, which is the train from Campanhã, not a flight.

Porto’s cruise ships do not dock in Porto. The Terminal de Cruzeiros do Porto de Leixões sits on the south mole at Matosinhos, ‘just 3 kilometres from the city of Porto’ in the port authority’s words and about 10 kilometres from the airport, with a 340-metre quay built for 2,500 turnaround passengers. APDL’s own page lists three ways into town: metro line A from Senhor de Matosinhos to Estádio do Dragão through the centre, first train 05:59 and last 01:00 every 12 to 15 minutes; STCP buses ‘outside the harbour’; and taxis outside the port, which are allowed to drive in to the terminal. It does not name the nearest metro station’s walking distance or the bus line numbers, so we do not either; the 500 along the coast to Praça da Liberdade is the STCP line that serves Matosinhos, and its page returned a 404 to us. A Z3 Andante title covers the metro ride from Matosinhos to Trindade, and the hop-on hop-off bus that sells to cruise passengers at the gate is the same product as in town, at the same price. The airport is a separate arrival: a ship-to-flight transfer is a taxi or a booked car, because no public line joins the two without the centre in between. One thing the terminal and the airport share: neither official page states a luggage rule, a left-luggage counter or a lift map, so a case has to assume the metro’s level boarding and the city’s stairs, and nothing in between.
